ALDI & LIDL

We started the day topping up the engine coolant which has been leaking again. We went on a family walk on a footpath across the fields and over a pedestrian level crossing across the track that carried scarily fast trains.

We were looking for a short flat-blade screwdriver but the Texaco garage, the only shop in Swarkestone had neither these or newspapers. Steve got the bike out and cycled towards Derby along Pingle Lane, the A5132 and A514 to look for a screwdriver in ALDI or LIDL or perhaps find a hardware shop.

He also found a Co-operative store for a newspaper and a pharmacy for free COVID-19 testing kits, seen here next the solar powered phone charger.

Back at the narrowboat we had Thai soup for lunch and read our books. We have Kindle apps on most devices but we have also been picking up paperbacks from C&RT Service Stations along the way. Hilary is reading a paperback copy of Time and Time Again by Ben Elton.

The old Derby branch of the canal is now a footpath and national cycle path into Derby.

Hilary reported to Long Term Narrowboat Hire our latest problems and Dave said he would get Darrol to come out on Monday and replace our Webasto central heating with a Eberspächer heating system and try to fix the coolant leak. Steve spent some time with an adjustable spanner trying to tighten the jubilee clips on the coolant hose joints but this doesn’t seem to have worked. She booked us in to Sawley Marina from Friday to Tuesday while this work was done.

We watched The Syndicate on BBC iPlayer and later Sewing Bee on live telly.

Steve found this cherry spiced rum in ALDI but it had a bit of an industrial alcohol taste behind the cherry flavour.
