We set off from Aston on Trent at 10:00 hrs. and through Weston Lock which dropped us down another 10 feet 11 inches and then Aston Lock 8’ 1” down again, and then Shardlow Lock which dropped us another 4’ 5”.

Shardlow looked like a nice old heritage canal town.

It had lots of old canal buildings which were now fancy apartments.

We moved from the Trent & Mersey Canal onto the wide River Trent and pulled into Sawley Marina where we had booked a 5 day stay with electrical hookup. Despite a shambles with their booking system we finally were directed to a jetty and mooring H37 next to narrowboat Mad Hatter (which had no name on it yet!).

There are some floating park homes here as well as loads of narrowboats and river cruisers.

We did a family walk to the Co-op in Sawley.

And on the way we had a drink in the beer garden of the Harrington Arms.

The chimneys in the distance reminded us of times when we were living in Nottingham.
