We stayed on our mooring by bridge 63 on the Shropshire Union Canal at Market Drayton on Wednesday 24th March 2021.
We went for a family walk along the canal passing new apartments with their own moorings for narrowboats on jetties with electric hookup points. Boats with witty names such as Narrow Escape and Slimline Tonic were moored up, but most were unoccupied.
Above: Market Drayton. Spot Vera in the doorway of the Old Barbers Shop.
We walked into town to checkout the weekly Wednesday Market and do some shopping. We went into The Original Factory Shop where Steve got some shoes suitable for walking about town. All the footwear that he had brought was geared up for cold, muddy, wet weather.
Wilko was next for a bucket (Steve had carried a mop back from Wilko in Birmingham last week on our bicycle, carrying it like a lance for 3 miles) and some new doormats to try and stop the ingress of mud onto the boat.
Boat and feet washing and cleaning were carried out in the afternoon with the sun on the stern. Steve and Vera walked into town to post some letters and locate LIDL and Morrisons. B&M Home Store had closed down in the centre, but this was because it had relocated to a massive new location by Morrisons.
There was a J. D. Wetherspoon pub in Queen Street. This pub was originally Market Drayton’s first purpose-built cinema. The Hippodrome opened its doors to the public in 1927. The last picture show was in 1966. The cinema then became a bingo hall and later a supermarket. https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/shropshire/the-hippodrome-market-drayton.
In the evening we watched on-demand television because there is zero television reception via the aerial on our mooring. We watched “Unforgotten” Series 4 Episode 5 and can’t wait for the final episode next week.
