On Wednesday (16/06/2021) morning we did a family walk to do some shopping at ALDI, which was nearby as we were in the centre of Worcester. Our friends Annie and Ian found us on The Duke by bridge 5 on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal and we walked through the pleasant historic city to the Farriers Arms (well recommended) for lunch.
In the afternoon we moved down into Diglis Basin passing through two locks and The Commandery.

Set in the heart of historic Worcester, The Commandery is most famous for being the Royalist Headquarters during the deciding battle of the English Civil War – the Battle of Worcester 1651.

Diglis Basin is at the junction of the canal with the River Severn and has been renovated with lots of nice apartment blocks where there used to be canal wharves and industrial buildings.

Vera checked it out and approved.

Our swan family were sorry to see us go as we were a source of multi-seeded whole meal bread.

We found the Travelodge hidden away in the corner of Cathedral Square where Annie and Ian were staying and were able to have a shower and Prosecco, before dining at the Cosy Club next door.

This was the view of Worcester from the Travelodge bedroom.

And it was tucked in behind the Cosy Club.

Annie and Ian were keen to take us to the Cardinal’s Hat pub (AKA Cardinal Shat), which claims to be Worcester’s oldest pub.

A good old-fashioned pub which had featured on Channel 4’s “Four in a Bed” and came second in 2017. Kegs had been converted to stools for us to sit on in the beer garden (alley) and Vera soon made friends with the staff and was rewarded with gravy bones.

Steve was impressed with the Hogan’s Libertine Cider. Described by Hogan as indulgent, sweetly satisfying cider made in the Malvern Hills. Burnt umber in colour, dark, bittersweet, warming Libertine is a rich, tannic cider with unusual depth. Satisfying, exotic and grown up (but a bit on the fringes)....wild, radical, brooding and delicious. This cider has won 4 international gold medals over the past two years together with Best in Class.

Inviting curious folk to taste proper cider!
