Audlem seems to have all the boater needs, when the pubs are open!
We arrived there after chugging through the 5 Adderley Locks and then 14 of the 15 Audlem Locks mooring up between lock 14 and lock 15 at 16:30 hrs.
We filled up with water at the Canal & River Trust Service Area. Gauges were falling out of our consul on the stern which appeared to only have 2 retaining screws, our front fender had caught on a lock and snapped a chain that was holding on and Hilary reported trouble with the gears.
Boaters were sitting out in the sun with cans of beer and mobile fire pits. One East End bloke seemed about to burst out singing Knees Up Muvva Brown as he swigged from a bottle of brown ale and wood smoke from his fire drifted across the cut.
Steve and Vera walked into Audlem in search of a Royal Mail letter box to post some birthday cards. Locals looked at us “gone out” when we asked for a mailbox. Who uses such things in this electronic age! There was a Post Office (in the butcher’s shop!) but you could only post mail inside when it was open, and it wasn’t now.
We eventually found one on the far side of town. Judging by the boater's bottle bin this morning they had all been enjoying the spring weather sitting by the tow path yesterday.
