Up the Shroppie

Writer's picture: Stephen HawkinsStephen Hawkins

On Thursday 3rd June 2021 we cruised along the Shropshire Union Canal with the aim of using the Canal & River Trust Services at Wheaton Aston and turning the narrowboat around to head towards Wolverhampton on the next leg of our journey on the Stourport Ring.

Rich landowners were given elaborate bridges to allow the canal to be cut through their property. We went through a lot of cuttings in the shadow of trees.

We passed the pretty village of Brewood on an embankment.

Countrywide Cruisers didn’t look particularly salubrious.

We passed over a viaduct and made use of the Canal & River Trust Services at Wheaton Aston after passing through it’s lock, and then turning the boat around in the winding hole.

We went back to our Dovecote mooring, passing the Wolverhampton Boat Club which was setup here in 1966.

We moored up where we had been this morning, but now facing the other way.

The sunset was impressive.
