Weedon Bec and Plan B

Writer's picture: Stephen HawkinsStephen Hawkins

The name Weedon Bec came came from the Old English 'Wēo-dūn' meaning 'temple hill,' so it is likely that there was a heathen temple here. Next to the canal is the former Napoleonic War era Military OrdnanceDepot, established by Act of Parliament in 1803, as part of the British anti-invasion preparations of 1803–05. The palace here was to be the refuge of George III if Napoleon invaded Britain, so it was not required.

All fast food requirements were catered for, including an Indian restaurant, but we made do with Tesco Express.

The town had a soulless Marsden”s pub where everyone was drinking Guinness as the beer offering was so poor. We were on Dry July so it didn’t matter.

The technology shop and the bridal gown shop seemed to be doing well but the Apple Repair Shop had closed down. The Grand Union Canal had a lot of long term moored boats. We had to slow down and cruise by on tick over so this slowed our progress on Saturday (10/07/2021).

We passed some nice canalside houses.

You could moor your boat in the back garden.

We passed Gayton Marina where we had started out from on previous holidays and SPICE weekends (https://steve33.tripod.com/travel/narrowboats.htm).

A sign-post indicated that we still had 77 miles to go to Brentford and the junction with the River Thames in West London.

More canal heritage properties have been converted to apartments.

We shared some locks with Juniper, a holiday boat from Wyvern Shipping.

The wide locks were hard work but were quite far apart, allowing time for recuperation.

We passed under some impressive old bridges.

And after a long day of cruising we moored up at Cosgrove.

Our route to the pub was via the horse tunnel under the canal.

In the Barley Mow beer garden we met the crew of Plan B from Milton Keynes and Vera and their cocker spaniel ran crazily around the field.

Then back through the horse tunnel to our mooring spot.

Which was just along from Plan B.

Tomorrow we would go over the Iron Trunk Aqueduct.

We enjoyed watching the last episode of Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Video before bed.
