Wolverhampton Flight

Writer's picture: Stephen HawkinsStephen Hawkins

On Friday 4th June 2021 we trundled out of the Shropshire Union Canal, passing through a flock of Napton Narrowboat holiday hire boats returning to base. We tackled the 21 locks of the Wolverhampton flight and moored up for lunch, overlooked by lager swigging ne’er-do-wells after the top lock with it’s heritage cottages.

The water was very clear here and you could see fish.

We made use of the Canal & River Trust Services in the old Fellows, Morton & Clayton building.

We continued through the industrial backwaters of the Black Country.

There was lots of colourful graffiti and barbed and razor wire.

Redundant equipment rusted along the canalside.

We met our friends Lloyd and Joolz and their two greyhounds, who took us to the New Inn in Coseley.

Where we were able to sample Holden’s finest ale in a jolly pub atmosphere that we had not experienced for over a year.

In the evening Joolz kindly did some laundry while we scoffed a splendid Chinese takeaway feast.
